A BMS (Battery Management System) is the electronic circuit that supervises a rechargeable battery pack. Lithium-ion and LiFePO4 cells deliver excellent energy density, but they are damaged by overcharging, over-discharging, extreme temperatures and unbalanced cells — and in the worst cases they can catch fire. The BMS is the guardian that prevents all of this.

The Four Core Functions of a BMS

  • Protection: disconnects the load or charger on over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short circuit, and high/low temperature.
  • Cell balancing: keeps every cell at the same voltage. Without balancing, the weakest cell limits the whole pack and capacity quietly shrinks cycle after cycle.
  • Monitoring & reporting: measures pack voltage, current, temperature and state of charge (SOC).
  • Communication: smart BMS units report all of this to your product via CAN, UART or RS485 — and increasingly over Bluetooth to a phone app.

Protection Board vs. Smart BMS

A basic protection board (e.g. 3S–13S for e-bikes and small devices) handles protection and simple balancing at very low cost. A smart BMS adds a microcontroller, precise coulomb counting and a communication bus — necessary for energy storage systems, telecom backup, solar applications and anything fleet-monitored. The right choice depends on your product's price point and how much the end user needs visibility.

How to Spec a Custom BMS: Five Questions

  1. Chemistry and configuration: Li-ion (3.7 V) or LiFePO4 (3.2 V)? How many cells in series — 3S, 10S, 16S, 24S?
  2. Continuous current: peak and continuous discharge current determine MOSFET sizing and heat.
  3. Communication: none, UART, RS485, CAN, or Bluetooth with app?
  4. Environment: indoor, outdoor, automotive vibration, waterproofing?
  5. Certifications: CE, UN38.3 transport testing, or industry-specific approvals?

Common Mistakes We See

  • Undersizing the continuous current rating "to save cost" — leading to overheating in the field.
  • Skipping balancing on large packs — capacity collapses within a year.
  • No temperature sensing — the single most dangerous omission on lithium packs.

Our BMS line covers 3S–24S configurations (12 V–72 V+) with passive or active balancing, CAN/UART/RS485 communication and optional Bluetooth monitoring — and we design custom variants for e-mobility, energy storage and power tools.
